Palin With Pizza, Yum

I better say what I have to say about Sarah Palin now, because the narrative could easily change at the debate tonight. (Watching it at the Parkway with pizza, I hope.)

First, I can't stay focused on how "dangerous she is for this country" now that Obama's back up in the polls. That's partly because it's hard to take her seriously--the Dubya Paradox--and partly because she's such a great character. For maximum clarity, I'm not saying she has character, but that she is one. Taken together, the moose-hunting, the beauty pageants, the First Dude on his champion "snow machine," the preggers daughter, the son off to war, the Down Syndrome baby half-birthed on a plane, the updo and glasses "pr0n secretary" look (which I'm sporting for debate day), the readily-imitable voice, the religious nuttery--it's just so rich.

Second, I think the McCain campaign was mistaken in thinking a woman in politics could get away with being transparently dumb. Women have to pass a higher threshhold to be taken seriously. (As a black person, Barack Obama does too, but he's such a superbrain that it's a nonissue and we forget all about it.) George Bush, in the early years, used masculine swagger to make up the deficit in confidence created by his obvious dumbness. Palin isn't getting off so easy.

Incidentally, I saw clips from a 2000 Bush speech and was astonished at the difference between then and now. The man is a dehydrated water balloon. It's hard to remember how virile and scary he once seemed. As with Palin, as soon as they become cowering and meek instead of pathetic but powerful, you almost want to pity them. But then you just tell that to some baby boomer and they'll be more than happy to scold you on how dangerous ruining this country right wing nuts believe dinosaurs caused global warming and so forth.

And to all those who made contribs to Planned Parenthood in Palin's name, I'd like to thank you for my delightful pap last week.

Is "Obamedia" the New "Liberal Media"?

Yes it is.

Remember the good old Liberal Media? Conservatives bitched and moaned about the media's "liberal bias." Many media outlets absorbed the shame-dumping, got all self-conscious and needed to prove the critics wrong. So when Bush took us to war in Iraq, it was, gosh, just a fine idea.

The very concept of truth got mushed into a spectrum with opposing opinions on each end and the accepted truth lying exactly in between. Reality was the median point between Ann Coulter and Michael Moore. Call it the Crossfire era. Weenie Democrats like John Kerry and liberal castrati like Alan Colmes couldn't win that tug-o-war.

Now that three-quarters of the nation agrees that Bush sucks, I guess "the media" can too. The Crossfire era is so over.

But I'm hearing echoes of it in the Democratic primary race. The Clintons, ever the Karl Rove copycats, are crying favoritism. MSNBC, in particular, supposedly hates Hillary Clinton and is all ga-ga for Barack Obama. So, of course, when MSNBC hosted the big number two-oh Democratic debate on Tuesday, moderator Tim Russert had to prove it wasn't so.

Hence a big, scary question for Obama about Louis Farrakhan supporting him. (Obama faltered a bit at first, but then knocked it out of the park with his "reject and denounce" line.)

Which made me wonder, where can I get a Jews for Obama shirt? Or perhaps

יִדן
פֿאַר
!אָבאַמאַה

would be better. (It's Yiddish: Yidn far Obama!) I could send one to Joel Stein! Sorry if the vowels show up funky on your screen; did my best.

Oh, and Chris Matthews' humiliation of Texas State Senator and Obama supporter Kirk Watson after last week's debate? Same shit.

I'd like to thank Crimson for the term "weenie Democrat." So apt.

Bush II: More Fun Than Expected

When Bush won a second term, didn't you get that doomsday feeling? I did. I remember working up a little list of awful things that could happen, just so I wouldn't be too surprised. Implosion of the planet by environmental abuse, explosion by nuclear bombs, Brian getting drafted to Iraq. You know, daydreams.

Granted, all those things might still happen. But Bush's second term seems more and more like a great period of uncomfortable squirming for the Bush crowd and satisfying revelation for the rest of us. He must wish he lost that election. At least then he wouldn't be the jackass sitting on the throne when the mob comes with the guillotine. I know there are still plenty of horrors being wrought daily by this administration, but pardon me if I enjoy this satisfying denouement. It's the part at the end of the movie when they show a little picture of each Bushie alongside a humiliating capsule description of where they are now.
